Gerard Byrne Studio

Born and raised in Dublin, Gerard Byrne has worked professionally as an artist for almost thirty-five years. As a Modern Impressionist, his work is renowned for its vibrant palette, expressive brushwork, and exquisite treatment of light and shade. His unique approach is both spontaneous and faithful, a thrilling fusion of technical skill and innate sensitivity, resulting in work that is rich in emotional resonance. Byrne’s technique is spontaneous, quickly producing compositions of unexpected perspectives and sharp angles without the aid of preparatory drawings. His approach emulates the artworks of Impressionist Masters. Like them, he is captivated by the transitory effects of sunlight, and focuses on moments of everyday life, elevating the ordinary to the extraordinary.

Though he has travelled and worked in Berlin, London, New York, Singapore, and beyond, Byrne’s painting inevitably returns to his native city of Dublin. Most prominent in his oeuvre are scenes of Dublin’s city and coastline, particularly south from the iconic Poolbeg Towers, to Dun Laoghaire, Dalkey, and Killiney. His work invokes the essence of contemporary Dublin – its streets, diverse people and red brick Georgian and Victorian buildings – similarly to other artists who were very interested in depicting Dublin before Byrne like Flora Mitchell (1890 – 1973) and Harry Kernoff (1900 – 1974).

Byrne’s work has been celebrated with several awards, commemorations, and prestigious commissions, and has featured in numerous solo and group shows. His paintings can be found in various distinguished art collections, including the Government of Ireland; the Embassy of Ireland, Beijing; the Embassy of Ireland, Singapore; the Office of Public Works, Ireland; Guinness PLC; The Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin; Dylan Hotel Dublin; Royal Irish Regiment, Belfast; The Citadelle Art Museum, Texas, USA. Byrne has received extensive coverage for his work both nationally and internationally across all media formats. Gerard Byrne’s artistic career is a unique one. He is a self-taught artist, originally trained as an electrician. Motivated by a passion for art, and a determination to achieve his dream of being a professional artist, Byrne has established himself as a prominent figure in Ireland’s contemporary art scene.
