Sayo Senoo

Sayo Senoo is a Japanese contemporary artist based in France, working with atypical materials such as used condoms gleaned from outdoor cruising locations, contaminated air from the forbidden areas of Fukushima, or animal organs discarded by hunters in the Arctic. By transforming rubbish into delicate art works, she questions the nature of our disgust and fear against dirty things. She makes publications to document her ephemeral works and as a creative medium in itself.

After studying phenomenology at University of Tokyo, she studied contemporary art at Musashino Art University(Japan) and Université Paris 8. In 2010 she benefit from an artist in residency La Cité Internationale des Arts de Paris. Her works have been exhibited in various galleries and cultural centres, including La Maison de la Culture du Japon, la Galerie Bansard, and Lagalerie. In 2019 she received the Paul-Louis Weiller Award for sculpture from the Academy of Fine Art in Paris.

Since she started self-publishing activity, she has participated in various art book fairs, including Paris Ass Book Fair (2020,22,23), Bergen Art Book Fair (Norway, 2020-23), I never Read (Basel, Swiss, 2022), The Other Art Book Fair (Den Haag, Nederland, 2022) or Trafic #1 (France, Marseille, 2022).
