Sharon Paz presents a performative reading by Cate Russell of her latest printed and online project The Secretary Story.
The story is based on both historical research on propaganda and advertising and fictional writing. The short story has twenty chapters that combine text and drawings, in between real and fiction, accompanied by footnotes linking to historical information. The audience can choose the chapter order, exploring the idea of flexible narratives, questioning linear thinking and the absolute truths.
Yuki Jungesblut will embark on a short performative lecture expanding on Kirin Quest, an artist book of the hybrid kind. For her project she has used Lewis Carroll’s non-sense poem The Hunting of the Snark as a travel guide artist to explore the territory of the East China Sea – setting out from the East Coast of China, to Japan, to Okinawa – the former Ryukyu Kingdom, Taiwan and Korea – always searching for the mysterious Kirin, a mythical creature, also of a hybrid kind that is the harbinger of peace, happiness and wisdom as well as a protector of justice. Yuki follows (in part) the ancient trade routes between the states and kingdoms that preceded the present day nations. These trade and diplomatic missions brought new ideas, goods and technologies, in other words cultural exchange and advancement. Taking up traces and hints, wandering between land and cityscapes, humans, nature and the supernatural, Yuki’s undertaking is drawn to what connects rather than that what divides.
About Yuki Jungesblut and Turtle Lab Berlin
Yuki Jungesblut is an artist working with various forms of narrative investigation, photography, installation and film. She seeks out potentialities and instances of overlap between imagination, fiction and reality, often exploring underdetermined states and liminality in general. Many of her multi-layered projects are dedicated to the construction and communication of thought spaces around specific subjects matters like waiting or ennui or explore emotional territories tied to collective and individual memory. Her freestyle research aims to combine analysis and associative play with aesthetic pleasure.
Yuki Jungesblut is chronically curious, a lay environmentalist, an avid explorer of imaginary and real worlds and has a penchant for combining the seemingly disparate. In her spare time she enjoys playing the piano.
Her most recent work is the artist book Kirin Quest – based on a project that playfully investigates the cultural interconnections of the countries bordering the East China Sea.
Turtle Lab Berlin is a shared studio and research space located at the basement of Schwedterstr. 262. It is run by Yuki Jungesblut and currently occupied by Jeremiah Day, Yuki Jungesblut and Sharon Paz – plus an additional member on a rotating basis. Everyday is simple lab life.
Turtle Lab Open Days occupy the interim space between studio and exhibition, private and public, casual and serious, work in development and “finished products”. Their objective is to bring together artists and researchers from in and around Turtle Lab and thus enter a “cross-media” symposium sporting a mixture of individual works and word-exchange possibly triggered by what is on display. Turtle Lab Berlin is dedicated to open discussion, research and the serendipity of free play. (the rest is silence.)
