Date: Saturday 15 July
Location: Courtyard Room, The Printworks, Dublin Castle
Price: Free and no need to book. First come first served until spaces are filled.
Description
Presenting a brief history of the mimeograph, its origins in the late 19th Century as a device that revolutionised the office space, its subsequent use and development as an egalitarian print methodology in different parts of the globe. As it went into decline as an office tool in the 1970’s, it was taken up by activists, poets, and artists as a relatively quick and affordable method of production.
Artist Julie Merriman demonstrates the duplicators she uses to produce her books and prints and introduce the audience to the various materials associated with mimeograph, from the Gestetner stencils, the cutting pens, the textured plates, to the inks. Merriman will speak about how the mimeograph is used today and its, as yet relatively unexplored, potential as a contemporary visual art print medium.
